Trump, California Governor in war of words as LA burns

Washington/Los Angeles: U.S. President Donald Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom were Tuesday seen in verbal duel even rioting over immigration raids continues for the 4th consecutive day in as Los Angeles.

The protests that later turned violent began in Los Angeles on Friday night after the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials arrested 44 people for violating immigration laws.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later said ICE officials had arrested a total of 118 immigrants who did not have documents required to stay in the US.

Video footage online showed people indugling in arson and looting, and clashing with security forces.

The protest later spread to other U.S. cities including New York, Philadelphia, Dallas, Austin and San Francisco.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said late on Monday afternoon that some protesters had started throwing objects at officers and the use of less lethal munitions had been authorised, adding in an X post: “Less lethal munitions may cause pain and discomfort.”

As the situation worsened, Donald Trump announced to deploy 700 Marines as well as 4,000 National Guard members in Los Angeles.

"Unmistakable, Authoritarian Step"

Trump's decision to deploy U.S. military to control domestic violence led to a serious clash between Washington and California with the Governor Gavin Newsom calling the move "deranged fantasy of a dictatorial president".

He also said Trump's move is "an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism" and that the deployment was "about stroking a dangerous president's ego".

US President Donald Trump however justified his decision saying that if he had not deployed Marines and other soldiers in Los Angeles, the city “would be burning to the ground right now”.

“If I didn't ‘SEND IN THE TROOPS' to Los Angeles the last three nights, that once beautiful and great City would be burning to the ground right now,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Why Gavin Newsom is upset?

Differences between Donald Trump and Gavin Newsom are especially over deployment of U.S. federal forces control the rioting in Los Angeles.

Critics said the American military does not have any domestic law enforcement role. The US Marines had been deployed domestically in 2005 for Hurricane Katrina and for the 26/11 attacks.

Back in 1992, President George H.W. Bush had deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles to quell the riots sparked over the acquittal of white police officers who were charged with assaulting Rodney King, an unarmed Black man. The decision was however taken at the request of then California Governor Pete Wilson and Mayor Tom Bradley.

On the other hand, Trump deployed the National Guard against the wishes of current California Governor Gavin Newsom. Gavin is so upset that he has announced plans to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the deployment of federal forces.

The last time a president had sent National Guard troops to a US city without a governor's approval was in 1965.
