New Delhi/Washington: India and the United States early Saturday February 7, 2026 morning released a Joint Statement giving the detailed framework of the trade deal the two countries intend to sign.

A glance at the joint statement confirms the apprehensions in India that the Modi government has succembed to the pressure by Donald Trump, and that the US has been given upper hand.

The Joint Statement also confirms that India has indeed agreed to buying oil from Russia, and to cut tariffs to zeron amany imports from America.

According to the Joint Statement, the United States will impose reciprocal tariffs on the Indian goods imported in America. Though this has been reduced from earlier announced 25% to 18%. The 18% duty on the Indian goods exported to the U.S. is still hire as many items, including textiles and apparels, earlier had 2.93% to 3.31% duty.

The Joint Statement further confirms that the Modi government has agreed to open the Indian market for the American agriculture products - a move which has sparked a huge outrage in India. And, it is feared that the US, which has been India's trade surplus partner, will no longer be the same.

Despite outrage, the Modi govenment is defending its decision, claiming the trade deal with the U.S. is its major success. Following is the statement in full.

The United States of America (United States) and India are pleased to announce that they have reached a framework for an Interim Agreement regarding reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade (Interim Agreement). Today’s framework reaffirms the countries’ commitment to the broader U.S.-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations, launched by President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2025, which will include additional market access commitments and support more resilient supply chains. The Interim Agreement between the United States and India will represent a historic milestone in our countries’ partnership, demonstrating a common commitment to reciprocal and balanced trade based on mutual interests and concrete outcomes.
