New Delhi: The Supreme Court's judgement that no school in the Capital could hike fee without permission from the Delhi Government has been welcomed whole-heartedly by the students' parents bringing a new ray of hope for them.

''Before the recent Lok Sabha elections, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had assured the parents that the Government will extend all support to them. A notification to this effect was also issued by the Department of Education, Delhi Government stalling fee school hike till schools convene Parent Teacher Association meeting,'' Varinder Arora, Convenor, Delhi School Parents Association, said yesterday.

''Now the Supreme Court has cleared all decks and allowed the government to intervene, which it should do immediately and help in roll back of school fee,'' he added.

''We are not against the marginal annual calculated fee hike by the schools. However, the abrupt hike of more than 50 per cent per quarter by a premier school means families have to curtail a substantial amount from their domestic budget to meet the school's requirement,'' rued Mr Arora.

The apex court had reaffirmed yesterday its earlier judgement of 2004 in which it had held that the government can regulate the fee structure.

In its judgement, the court had held that private unaided schools could not enhance the fees at their free will and they have to seek approval of the Directorate of Education for the purpose.
