BJP fully responsible for Babri mosque demolition: Chidambaram

New Delhi: Supreme Court today issued notices to the Centre, Uttar Pradesh Government and others on a petition seeking removal of "unnecessary restrictions" at the make-shift temple of Ramlala at Ayodhya.

A bench, comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, Justices Deepak Verma and B S Chauhan, sought the response of the authorities after hearing Janata Party president Dr Subramanian Swamy.

He had contended that unnecessary restrictions in the name of security being imposed on devotees at the make-shift temple were making it virtually impossible for them to offer prayers.

Dr Swamy, who appeared in person, stated that the "Garbh Grih" (sanctum sanctorum) has been placed under bullet-proof cover and the height of boundary wall raised. Only reasonable restrictions should be put in place for the security of the temple, he added.

Security measures were enhanced at the temple after the July 5, 2005 attack by five terrorists who managed to blast their way into the outer cordon of security. They were killed by police after a one and half hour exchange of fire within a stone's throw of the sanctum sanctorum.
