Mumbai: Maharashtra's ruling Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Wednesday struck an alliance for the 2012 polls to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other civic bodies in the state.

The announcement comes on the heels of the tie-up announced last week by the Shiv Sena, Bharatiya Janta Party and Republican Party of India for the polls.

The Congress-NCP announced the alliance for February 2012 polls in Mumbai, Thane and Nashik.

Asked about the seat sharing for the 227 seat strong BMC, NCP state chief Madhukarrao Pichhad said that the decision is yet to come.

"We have set up a committee comprising five members each from NCP and Congress. They will analyse the candidates and the likeliness of best arrangements and let us know by Nov 30," Pichhad told IANS.

"A decision will then be taken in the presence of Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, state Congress president Manikrao Thakre and Deputy Chief Minister (and NCP leader) Ajit Pawar and me," he added.

In 2007 civic polls, both the parties had contested separately after their seat-sharing talks had failed.
