Chennai: A Ph.D scholar was on Tuesday brutally beaten up by some right-wing students after he organised a beef fest on the campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to protest against Modi government's decision to ban cattle sale.
R. Sooraj, a Ph.D. Scholar who is also a member of the Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle, was mercilessly thrashed for eating beef as part of a protest against restrictions on cattle trade. The beef-eating protest was held by a group of students on Sunday night.
The attacked student, whose eye looks severely bruised in the photograph circulated widely in the media, has been taken to Sankara Nethralaya, Nungambakkam.
"Sooraj was beaten up badly just for organising this fest," said, Sooraj's friend Nidheesh.
Adding that the accused were also the students of the IIT, Nidheesh said, "A police complaint has been filed against them."
The administration of the institute has not yet commented on the incident.
Meanwhile, Madras High Court has pust a stay for four weeks the Centre's notification banning sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter, and sought its response to PILs which contended that the rules should have been approved by Parliament first.
The HC order has come amid a raging row on the ban, with non-BJP parties and state governments of Kerala, West Bengal and Puducherry stridently opposing the Centre's recent notification.
