Expressing deep concern that none of India's universities is among world's top 500 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said it's a blot on the country which everyone should work to remove.

"The country which was host to universities like Nalanda, Vikramshila, Takshila and Vallabhi is sturggling ti get a place in the list of world's top 500 universities. What can be more shameful than this?

"Its a blot on our country and we should all join hands to remove this", Prime Minister said while addressing the centenary celebrations of Patna University on Saturday.

"To improve the quality and performance of our universities hence the government will spend 10,000 crore", he said.

Elaborating further he said 20 universities from all across the country will be selected and the government will fund them for their transformation.

"We will provide an assistance of Rs 10,000 crore to 10 private universities and an equal number of government ones for a period of five years. All these universities have to do is to demonstrate their potential to become world class,” he said.

“The universities will be a selected on the basis of a challenge in which they will be required to prove their mettle. The selection will be based on factors such as history, performance and its roadmap to reach global benchmarks. A third party professional agency will be involved in the selection process", he added.

The Prime Minister said that in the era of globalisation, we need to understand the changing trends across the world and the increased spirit of competitiveness. In that context, India has to make its place in the world, he added.

He urged the students to think about innovative solutions to the problems faced by people. He said that by applying what they learn, and through the Start-Up sector, there is a lot that they can do for society.
