Malegaon Coronavirus Outbreak: An Environment Activist has decided to file a case against Commissioner of Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) holding him responsible for the Coronavirus Outbreak in the textile city.

Malegaon reported Covid-19 outbreak in the city on April 8 when five of its residents were found infected by the deadly virus.

Since then the city has witnessed an alarming surge in Coronavirus positive cases with the latest update saying a total of 96 infections. The city has also reported a number of coronavirus deaths though exact figure cannot be found due to lack of transparency and absence of a testing lab in the city.

"The Government of India as well as that of Maharashtra have issued an advisory to maintain cleanliness, hygiene and social distancing. But the Malegaon Municipal Commissioner didn't take any care about all these guidelines", Kaleem Abdullah, the Environment Activist, told ummid.com.

"The Commissioer also ignored the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order dated 15-10-2019 which clearly and specifically says to lift garbage on regular basis, clean sewage, drains of the town and schedule regular spraying of insecticides", he added.

Kaleem Abdullah is fighting a lawsuit at National Green Tribunal (NGT) over rampant pollution in Malegaon. Besides others, he has made the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) also a party in the case. The NGT interim order was in response to the petition earlier filed by Kaleem Abdullah.

"Hazardous waste weakens immune system creating severe respiratory problems which becomes more dangerous amid the Coronavirus outbreak", he said.

"The Commissioner has committed deliberate and criminal negligence despite knowing all the possibilities of Coronavirus spread in the city", he said.

"He will have to face the court now", Kaleem Abdullah, who is running "Green Malegaon Drive" since last few years, said. Thousands of trees have been planted in the interior of the city as part of this campaign.
