Eid al Fitr 2020 Moon Sighting Live Updates: The new moon of the month of Shawwal is not sighted today i.e. Friday May 22, 2020 corresponding to 29th of Ramadan 1441H.
Hence Saturday will be the 30th Ramadan and Sunday will mark the first day of Eid al Fitr, religeous authorities in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Kuwait and other neighbor states have officially confirmed.
Concerned authorities in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singpaore and Australia have also announced Sunday as the first day of Eid al Fitr.
In India, Muslims in Kerala will celebrate along with these states. Muslims in other parts of India will sight the Shawwal moon on Saturday.
Eid this year will be celebrated amidst Coronavirus lockdown and restrictions in place to contain Covid-19 spread. Muslims therefore have been asked to offer Eid prayers at home.
08:30 pm (Makkah Time): Tomorrow will be the last day of the holy month of Ramadan and Sunday is the first day of Eid Al-Fitr, the Saudi Royal Court said in an official statement released Friday.
"The Supreme court said that following reports received from courts based on eye monitors who are devoted to verifying whether the lunar month of Ramadan has completed or to be proceeded for one more day. The new moon of Shawal, which follows Ramadan, was not seen", the statement said.
"Therefore, it has been decided that tomorrow, Saturday will be the 30th day of Ramadan and that Sunday will be the first day of Shawal and Eid Al-Fitr", it said.
The Moon Sighting Committee of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Qatar and UAE have also officially announced that Sunday May 24 will be the first day of Eid al Fitr.
Similar statements have also been made by authorities in Turkey, Kuwait and other Gulf nations.
Elsewhere in the world, Australia, Turkey, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia have also confirmed that the first day of Eid al Fitr will be Sunday May 24, 2020.
In India, Muslims in Kerala will celebrate Eid al Fitr along with the Gulf nations on Sunday.

07:05 pm (Makkah Time): The New Moon of Shawwal has not been sighted in Saudi Arabia today i.e. Friday May 22, 2020 corresponding to 29th of Ramadan 1441H.
Hence Saturday will be 30th Ramadan and Eid al Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday May 24, 2020, Saudi Gazette reported.
However a confirmation from Saudi Royal Court is still awaited.
06:00 pm (Makkah Time): The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia, Ministry of Justice UAE, and religeous authorities in Qatar, Kuwait and other Gulf states will meet today after Maghrib prayers (07:10 PM Makkah Time) today i.e. Friday May 22, 2020 to decide the first day of Eid al Fitr.
An official decision about the first day of Eid al Fitr 2020 is likely shortly by 07:30 pm Makkah Time.
04:30 pm (Makkah Time): The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia, Ministry of Justice UAE, and religeous authorities in Qatar, Kuwait and other Gulf states will take a call on Eid al Fitr 2020 Moon after Maghrib prayer today i.e. Friday May 22, 2020 corresponding to 29th of Ramadan 1441H.
12:30 pm (Makkah Time): The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia, Ministry of Justice UAE, and concerned authorities in Qatar and Kuwait in separate appeals issued Thursday called upon the local residents to sight the crescent moon on Friday May 22 corresponding to 29th of Ramadan 1441H.
"In case of moon sighting local residents should report to the nearest court so that a decision on the first day of Eid al Fitr 2020 is taken", they said.
The Supreme Court called on whoever sights the crescent with naked eyes or through binoculars to report to a nearest court and register his testimony, or report to an authority of a region's centre in his area, according to Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The UAE had on Thursday announced the formation of a moon-sighting committee to spot the crescent.
"The committee will meet after the Maghrib prayers on on Friday, May 22, 2020 corresponding to 29th of Ramadan 1441H at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department to spot the crescent", the government sources said.
Special arrangements have been made and general appeals have also been issued to the masses by the authorities in Qatar and other Gulf states including Jordan, Kuwait, Muscat, Yemen, Sudan, Egypt, Tunisia, Iraq, Syria and Palestine to sight the Eid moon today on Friday May 22, 2020 corresponding to 29th Ramadan 1441H of the Islamic Calendar.
"If the moon is not sighted (today), then Saturday will mark a regular fasting day and Eid will be celebrated on Sunday May 24, 2020", Saudi Royal Court said.
Similar appeal to sight the moon on Friday has also been issued by Wifaqul Ulama, London. Wifaqul Ulama has also made special arrangement to sight the Eid 2020 moon at Royal Greenwich Observatory. Moon sighting can be seen live on Facebook from the observatory Friday.
The Australian National Imams Council and Majils Ugama Islam Singpaore have announced that Muslims in the two countries will celebrate Eid al Fitr on Sunday May 24, 2020.
"Saturday, May 23, will be the last day of the holy month of Ramadan, and Sunday, May 24 will be the first day of Shawwal, as well as Eid Al Fitr, the Australian National Imams Council said in a statement.
In a similar statement, Dr Nazirudin Mohd Nasir Mufti Singapore said, "According to astronomical calculations, the crescent for the month of Syawal did not appear this evening after sunset as it had set earlier. This signifies that tomorrow will be the end of 30 days of Ramadan. As such, I am pleased to announce that the first day of Syawal for the year of 1441 Hijrah falls on Sunday, 24 May 2020."
Muslims in the United States, UK, Canada, Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand and other parts of the world will also decide today when the Eid will be celebrated in these countries.
On the other hand, Muslims in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other South Asian countries will sight the Eid moon on Saturday May 23, 2020 corresponding to 29th of Ramadan in the region.
Eid al Fitr will be celebrated this year amidst the lockdown clamped to contain the spread of Coronavirus. Due to the restrictions, Muslims have been asked to offer Eid prayers at home.
Eid al Fitr marks the end of Ramadan - the month of fasting in which Muslims across the world refrained from eating and drinking during day time. Special prayers, including Traweeh prayers, were offered all across the Muslim world. A huge amount of money and food were also donated in the Holy month of Ramadan to help the poor and needy.
