UAE suspends ties with Israel

Tel Aviv: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has suspended diplomatic relation with Israel protesting the death of seven World Central Kitchen humanitarian workers in Gaza, i24NEWS reported citing official sources.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) had announced diplomatic relation with Israel on August 14, 2020.

The Tel Aviv based news network said the UAE suspended its relations with Israel after the occupation forces killed aid workers in Gaza on Tuesday.

'Netanyahu unashamed'

The brutal murders of the World Central Kitchen humanitarian workers that sparked global outrage were confirmed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

He was however unashamed and said:

“Such things happen in war."

In its report, i24NEWS said that the Emirati foreign ministry expressed outrage with the Israeli ambassador Amir Hayek over the incident.

World Central Kitchen (WCK), which was founded by celebrity chef Jose Andres, has been operating in Gaza, as well as in Israel and Lebanon, since the latest outbreak of war between Israel and the Palestinians.

'Systematically targeted'

The organisation had dispatched more than 1,700 trucks with food and cooking equipment through the Rafah crossing from Egypt by March 29, and was working through 68 "community kitchens", according to the BBC.

Additionally, the WCK has delivered 230,000 meals from Jordan, both overland and via airdrops, and sent 435,000 meals by sea.

The WCK convoy was hit by the Israeli airstrikes after leaving a Deir el-Balah warehouse after unloading more than 100 tonnes of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza by sea.

WCK founder José Andrés accused the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza of targeting his aid workers "systematically, car by car", according to the BBC.

List of countries cutting ties with Israel

The UAE is the latest to join a number of other countries to cut diplomatic relations with Israel following its murderous war in Gaza that has killed more than 32,000 Palestinians since Oct 7.

Bolivia was the first country to cut all diplomatic ties with Israel condemning its carnages in Gaza. Later, Turkey, Jordan, Honduras, Colombia, Chile, South Africa and Bahrain too recalled their envoy to Israel, accusing the far-right Zionist regime of committing “war crimes”.

The United Arab Emirates has also paused its involvement in the maritime aid corridor to Gaza until Israel assures aid workers in the enclave will be protected, Axios reported citing sources close to the UAE government.

Mohamed Al Khaja, the first UAE ambassador to Israel, described the latest developments as "the darkest day in the relations between the two countries."
