Mumbai: All 21 crew members, including 15 Indians, on-board the Liberian cargo ship that was hijacked near the coast of Somalia in the Arabian Sea, have been rescued safely, the Indian Navy said Friday January 05, 2024.
In a special operation, the Indian Navy Commandos on-board destroyer INS Chennai boarded the Liberian-flagged bulk carrier ‘MV Lila Norfolk’ and evacuated the crew members.
MV Lila Norfolk was hijacked by around five-six armed hijackers late Thursday evening, the cargo ship said in an SOS on UKMTP portal.
Responding to the concerning situation, the Indian Navy launched an MPA and diverted INS Chennai deployed for Maritime Security Operations to assist the hijacked vessel.
INS Chennai helicopter and MQ-9B Predator drones hovered above the hijacked ship when MARCOs commandos boarded MV Lila Norfolk to rescue the crew members.
According to reports, Somalian pirates abandoned the hijacked ship and ran away as soon as INS Chennai arrived.
Sanitisation by MARCOs has confirmed absence of the hijackers personnel, a statement by the Navy said and added that “the attempt to hijack was probably abandoned with the forceful warning by the Indian Navy.”
"INS Chennai is in the vicinity of MV and rendering support to restore the power generation & propulsion, and commence her voyage to next port of call", the Indian Navy spokesperson said.
The hijacking of the Liberian-flagged cargo ship is the third incident of its kind in the high seas on the country's west coast in the past one month or with the Indian Navy rising to the occasion with a rescue and relief operation.
