Bhopal: In a stunning claim, Devendra Pandey, National General Secretary of Hindu Mahasabha, Monday January 15, 2024 said that the police firing on Kar Sevaks in Ayodhya was part of a deal between Mulayam Singh Yadav, and BJP, RSS and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).
Hundreds of thousands of Kar Sevaks from across the country had gathered in Ayodhya on October 30, 1990 on a call given by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) for the construction of Ram Mandir on the site where 16th century historic Babri Masjid stood.
Mulayam Singh Yadav was Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He ordered heavy deployment of force in and around Ayodhay and vowed he would not allow anybody near Babri Masjid.
The police had barricaded about 1.5 km-long pathway to the Babri Masjid. As the Kar Sevaks tried to march towards the Babri Masjid on October 30, a clash erupted between the Kar Sevaks and the police. By noon, police received orders from CM Mulayam Singh Yadav to open fire at the Kar Sevaks, resulting in 17 deaths, according to India Today.
Later, the VHP and the BJP had used the firing to build a nationwide campaign. Those killed in the firing were declared ‘martyrs’ and their photographs were widely circulated. The ‘asthi yatra’ of the ‘martyrs’ was taken out all over India, triggering riots that left over 200 people dead, according to The Times of India.
The campaign helped the BJP win the June 1991 Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections. About a year and half later on December 06, 1992, Babri Masjid was razed to ground, forcing the then Congress government at the Centre to remove BJP's Kalyan Singh as CM and impose President’s rule in UP.
Later, the Supreme Court of India in an order passed on November 09, 2019 granted the ownership of the Babri Masjid land to Hindus and asked the government to form a trust to build Ram Mandir on the site.
The Mandir is still incomplete. But the government has decided to open it for worshippers January 22, 2024 onwards. The inauguration ceremony is being held few months before the 2024 General Elections.
Meanwhile in 2023, the BJP government in New Delhi conferred Padma Vibhushan (posthumous) on Mulayam Singh Yadav. Padma Vibhushan is the second-highest civilian award in India after Bharat Ratna.
Ahead of the "inauguration of Ram Mandir" on January 22, 2024, Hindu Mahasabha General Secretary Devendra Pandey claimed that Mulayam Singh Yadav and the BJP, RSS and VHP had together hatched a conspiracy for political mileage and the police firing on the Karsevaks in Ayodhya on October 30, 1991 was part of it.
Talking to a Hindi News Channel on YouTube, Pandey said the Padma Vibhushan award conferred on Mulayam Singh Yadav by the Narendra Modi government is in “recognition of the favour he had done to the BJP”.
“There have been hundreds of chief ministers in India who had done extraordinary work. What was Mulayam Singh Yadav’s achievement that deserved him Padma Vibhushan? Nothing, except the deal he had with the BJP, RSS and VHP”, he told the 4PM News.
“Mulayam Singh Yadav desired to become an undisputed leader of the Muslim community and the BJP had put its eyes on the Hindu vote bank. By ordering the police firing on the Kar Sevaks, Mulayam achieved what he wanted whereas the incident also politically helped the BJP”, he said.
Devendra Pandey said he was present in Ayodhya and got injured when the UP Police opened fire on the Karsevaks on October 30, 1991. He also claimed that they were the Karsevaks who had pelted stones at then VHP President, Ashok Singhal as a result he sustained injuries on his forehead.
Pointing at how the Rram Janmabhoomi Ayodhya was a political movement, Pandey said Muslim petitioner Hashmi Ansari was ready for a compromise after the Allahabad High Court ruling. He was however persuaded and funded by “some Hindutva organisations” to continue the legal battle.
“It is how the case reached the Supreme Court of India. It must be investigated who provided fund to Hashim Ansari”, Pandey said.
Pandey also demanded investigation of the statement made by Justice Sudhir Agarwal of Allahabad High Court.
“It must also be investigated the statement of Justice Sudhir Agarwal who said he was under immense pressure from within and from the political parties to keep the Ram Mandir case unresolved”, he said.
This is not the first time allegations have been made against Mulayam Singh Yadav for colluding with the Hindutva organisatsions.
Former Union minister and once a close aid of Mulyam Singh Yadav Beni Prasad Verma had in 2013 accused the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh of conniving with the “BJP to flare up communal passions and dared the SP leader to a public debate on Babri Masjid case”.
Claiming that communal tension was deliberately flared up to gain political mileage, Verma alleged that the BJP was confident that the Ayodhya dispute would flare communal passion in the state which would benefit the saffron brigade as well as the Samajwadi Party. "It was part of their strategy," he alleged as reported by Hindustan Times.
