India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other South Asian countries Friday June 21, 2024 marked the longest day of the year.

June 21 today is the longest day when the North Pole is tilted closest to the Sun.

Solstices

There are two solstices every year - one in June and the other in December. The June solstice marks the longest day north of the equator and the shortest day in the south.

June solstice, also known as the Summer Solstice, marks the changing of seasons. From today, the days will start getting shorter.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Summer Solstice typically falls on June 20 or 21, while in the Southern Hemisphere it occurs in December.

The Summer Solstice marks the longest day and the shortest night of the year for people living in the Northern Hemisphere, which includes countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, China, Australia, and India, among others.

Solar Noon

On June 21st, Solar Noon - when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky, occurs closer to mid-day than on any other day. This contributes to the prolonged daylight hours experienced throughout the day.

The summer solstice holds cultural and historical significance in many societies, including in India.

Ancient Indian astronomers and mathematicians made significant observations related to celestial events like the solstices. Their understanding of the Earth's tilt and its relationship with the Sun helped in developing calendars and predicting seasonal changes crucial for agriculture and religious festivals.

The iconic Stonehenge monument, situated in England, was built to align with the summer solstice. Every year, thousands flock to Stonehenge to mark the beginning of summer.

Strawberry Moon

The Full Moon of the month today will also be “Strawberry Moon”.

The Strawberry Moon coincides with the Summer Solstice, which is either on June 20, 21, or 22 around every 20 years.

The Strawberry Moon’s name comes from "the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries in northeastern North America," according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), according to Space.

Other names for this Full Moon are Rose Moon, Hot Moon, and Mead Moon.

The Celtic names of the Strawberry Moon are Horse Moon, Dyan Moon, and Rose Moon. Other English names are Flower Moon and Planting Moon.

The moon, despite its name, will look like a normal Full Moon.
