Kabul: Almost whole of Afghanistan lit up after the country’s cricket team defeated Bangladesh to reach the ICC T20 World Wednesday June 25, 2024 played at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

“Look what this success means to us!” Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) wrote on social media site X along with sharing the scenes from Jalalabad, Kabul, Khosht and other cities lightened up and bursting in celebrations.

Afghanistan Minister of Foreign Affairs and senior Taliban leader, Amir Khan Muttaqi, made a live video call to congratulate Afghanistan Cricket team Captain Rashid Khan and wished the team more success.

It’s raining world records

Afghanistan had played official international cricket for the first time in 2004 Asia Cricket Cup. Twenty years down the line they reached ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Semi Final defeating Bangladesh.

The Afghan cricket team had earlier defeated Australia in the knockout round.

Playing against Bangladesh in the last match of the knockout round, Rashid Khan took 04 wickets and scored 19 runs in 10 balls. In his innings which lasted for 11 minutes, Rashid Khan hit 3 sixes including the one on the last ball.

On Tuesday, Rashid Khan also became the fastest wicket takers in T20 World Cup. Rashid Khan took 150 wickets in just 92 T20 matches.

The earlier record was held by New Zealand Cricketer, Timothy Grant Southee, who had taken 150 wickets in 118 matches.

Rashid Khan Tuesday also created another record and became the only player in the world who took 04 wickets nine time in as many T20 matches.

The opening partnership of 59 runs by Afghan cricketers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran is also a record. The record of highest opening run partnership was earlier held by Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan of Pakistan Cricket Team. Afghan crickets Tuesday broke this record as well.

Playing first, Afghanistan had scored 115 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs. Chasing the target set by the Afghans, Bangladesh team was bowled out on 105 runs thanks to 4-wicket haul of captain Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq.

All eyes Afghanistan vs South Africa T20 WC Semi Final

The Afghanistan cricket team will now play against South Africa in the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2024.

The second T20 WC Semi Final will be played between India and England.

Both the semi-final matches will be held on Thursday June 27, 2024.

While the South Africa vs Afghanistan game of T20 World Cup 2024 at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, India vs England T20 match will be played at Providence Stadium or Guyana National Stadium in Guyana.

The South Africa vs Afghanistan game of the T20 World Cup 2024 will begin at 6 AM (IST) on Thursday, June 27.

The India vs England semifinal match of the T20 World Cup 2024 will begin at 8 PM (IST) on Thursday, June 27.

All eyes are on Afghanistan if it will continue its success run and do what the team has done to stalwart Australia and Asia giant Bangladesh in knockout matches.
