New Delhi: Om Birla, BJP MP from Kota, Rajasthan, has won the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker held in the Parliament Wednesday June 26, 2024.

He defeated the INDIA alliance joint candidate K Suresh to become Speaker for the consecutive second term.

Earlier Balram Jhakar of the Congress held the post of the Speaker for consecutive two terms.

The rare election for the post of Speaker was held at 11:00 am Wednesday by voice vote.

Prime Minister Modi and others from the BJP and the NDA alliance moved the motion and appealed the House to elect Om Birla as Speaker.

On the other hand, INDIA alliance leaders including Supriya Sule of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), moved the motion urging the House to elect K Suresh of the Congress as the new speaker.

The motion in favour of Om Birla and moved by PM Modi was adopted by voice vote.

Soon after the pro-tem speaker announced that Om Birla is the new Speaker, PM Modi and LoP Rahul Gandhi rushed to him to congratulate. They later escorted Om Birla to the Speaker’s chair.

After Om Birla took charge as the new Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha PM Modi highlighted his tenure in the 17th Lok Sabha and praised his handling of the House.

Hope dark days of the last five years are not repeated: Opp

LoP Rahul Gandhi, SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav and other INDIA alliance leaders however urged Om Birla not to allow the repetition of the “dark days” of the last five years during his new term.

"The Opposition would like to assist you in doing your work. We would like the House to function. It is very important that cooperation happens on the basis of trust. It is very important that the voice of the Opposition is allowed to be represented in this House”, LoP Rahul Gndhi said addressing Om Birla.

“The question is not how efficiently the House is being run. The question is how much the voice of the people is allowed to be heard in this house. The idea of running the house by silencing the voice of opposition is undemocratic”, Rahul said.

“We hope the suspension of the MPs and suppression of the opposition voice that we saw last time are not repeated”, Akhilesh Yadav said.

It is a convention in the Indian Parliament to nominate or elect Speaker with consensus. But, the NDA government led by Narendra Modi failed to bring consensus, forcing election after it refused to give Deputy Speaker post to the opposition INDIA alliance.
