NEET UG: The government is in consultations with the concerned departments to switch medical entrance NEET UG - which is currently being held in offline i.e. pen and paper mode, to online mode, a media report said.
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET UG is compulsory entrance test for admission in various medical courses including MBBS, BDS, BUMS and BHMS.
Unlike JEE Main, which is Computer based Test (CBT), the NEET exam is held in offline mode i.e using pen and paper OMR based since it was made compulsory for admission in medical courses.
The government is now considering to hold NEET UG in online mode just like JEE Main, Indian Express said citing official sources.
The latest development with regard to NEET UG came amid a nationwide protest against irregularities and reports of paper leak in NEET UG 2024.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) had conducted NEET UG 2024 on May 05, 2024. Since that day it is being alleged that the NEET UG 2024 paper was leaked.
Though initially NTA refuted all such “allegations”, later investigation by police revealed that NEET UG paper was accessed by some candidates a day before the exam on May 05, 2024.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, after initially denying lapses in the exam, later admitted there were “some irregularities in the NEET UG 2024” medical entrance.
On Firday, the Parliament session was also disrupted when the Speaker stopped LoP Rahul Gandhi from raising the NEET UG in the Lok Sabha. On the same day, Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution demanding to scrap the medical entrance NEET.
Amid the consultations between different departments, the report said the final decision lies on the National Medical Commission (NMC).
But the report citing sources said the NMC also acknowledged that the online exam is a “serious option".
However, suggestions to hold medical entrance NEET UG just like JEE Main, JEE Advanced and some other exams had been opposed in the past.
The NTA has been conducting UGC NET entrance in online mode till 2023. It however decided to hold UGC NET June 2024 in pen and paper mode. The exam however was cancelled amidst the reports of paper leak.
Two days ago, when the NTA released the revised schedule of UGC NET June 2024, it also announced holding the exam in online mode.
