Ramadan Moon Sighting 2024 Live Updates: The Holy Month of Ramadan begins in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh Tuesday March 12, 2024 as the new Crescent Moon was sighted in various parts of the three countries Monday evening.

"A meeting of Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee, Imarat-e-Sharaiyah-Hind under the presidentship of Maulana Niaz Ahmed Farooqui, Secretary Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has been held today at 1, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, in New Delhi. It has been verified that moon has been sighted in several parts of the country", the Imarat-e-shariyah-Hind said Monday.

"Thus it is declared that the 1st Ramadan falls on Tuesday, 12th of March 2024", it added.

Similarly, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan Chairman, Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, confirmed the start of Ramadan in Pakistan from Tuesday March 12, 2024 following a meeting in Peshawar.

The Bangladesh National Moon Sighting Committee took the decision at a meeting held at the Islamic Foundation's Baitul Mukarram office with Minister for Religious Affairs Faridul Haque Khan in the chair.

Ramadan also begins in the United Kingdom and South Africa from Tuesday March 12, 2024, according to Wifaqul Ulama (UK) and South Africa.

02:00 PM (IST): The Moon Sighting Committees in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and other South Asian countries will meet today after the Maghrib prayers to confirm the crescent sighting reports.

Bangladesh will make the official announcement first followed by India and Pakistan. The official announcement in India is likely by 06:30 PM Monday.

There is about half an hour time difference between these countries.

10:00 AM (IST): The Moon Sighting Committees in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal and Bangladesh have issued advisory to Muslims in the these countries to spot the crescent, Ramadan Moon or Ramzan Chand, Monday 29th Shaban 1445 H, corresponding to March 11, 2024 in the South Asian countries.

Sighting of Ramadan Moon in India, Pakistan

In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sril Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan and other South Asian countries the Central Moon Sighting Committees, also known as Markazi Ruet-e-Hilal Committees (Markazi Rooyat e Hilal Committee), and religious authorities have made special arrangements in Islamabad, Lahore, Dhaka, New Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Hyderabad and other cities to sight the new moon and decide the first day of Ramadan 2024.

The moon sighting committees will hold special session today after Maghrib prayers Monday and analyze reports of moon sighting, if any. The official announcement about the first day of Ramadan will be made soon after the sunset today.

Muslims in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, Bahrain and other Middle East states on the other have already announced to start the Holy Month from Monday March 11, 2024.

This followed after a formal announcement regarding the start of Ramadan was made by the Saudi Royal Court and the religious authorities in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt and other countries Tuesday.

Oman and Iran on the other hand have announced to decide today the exact date to commence the month of Ramadan 1445 AH.

Ramadan Start Date in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh

The sighting of new moon on 29th of the prevailing month is established tradition of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him).

If the moon is sighted on 29th, the new month starts the next day. Otherwise, the next day is counted as the 30th day of the on-going month and the next day is counted as the first day of the new month.

Hence, Tuesday March 12, 2024 will be the first day of Ramadan in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and other South Asian countries, if the new moon is sighted today.

If the new moon is not spotted today, then Wednesday March 13, 2024 will be the first day of Ramadan in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and other South Asian countries.

Ramadan start date in UK, US and Canada

The Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) and National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) Canada have announced start of Ramadan from Monday March 11, 2024.

"This is as per the Fiqh Council of North America which utilizes the criteria of the European Council of Fatwa and Research (ECFR)", MAC said.

In UK, Wifaqul Ulama had appealed to Muslims in London and other parts of the United Kingdom to sight the Ramadan moon on Sunday 29th of Shaban 1445 AH corresponding to March 11, 2024.

Majlis Ugama Islam Singapore has confirmed spotting of the Ramadan Moon on Sunday March 10, 2024. Fasting will begin also in Malaysia and Indonesia, two of Asia's largest Muslim countries, on Monday March 11, 2024.

The Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) decided start of Ramadan based on astronomical calculation. Accordingly, the council has announced start of Ramadan from Monday March 11, 2024.

"The first day of Ramadan 1445 is on Monday, March 11, 2024, insha’Allah. Tarawih prayer will start on Sunday night. Eidul-Fitr 1445 AH, the first day of Shawwal is on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, insha’Allah", FCNA said in a statement.

The FCNA further said that the expected date for Eidul-Adha 1445 AH, based on Saudi Ummul-Qura Calendar is Sunday, June 16, 2024.

The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) has also announced the start of Ramadan from Monday March 11, 2024.

Ramadan Moon confirmation in France, Germany, New Zealand, South Africa will also be made today.
