New Delhi: The cut motions moved by Opposition parties were negated in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The cut motion moved by CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta was defeated by 289 votes against and 201 in favour.
Later the House passed Demands for Grants of all Ministries along with the relevant Appropriation Bills through a voice vote.
Earlier, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar allowed the opposition members to move separate cut motions against demand for grants, amid a walkout by members of the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
The Speaker said even if there was no precedent to allow cut motions when demands for grants were set to be guillotined, she was drawn to a specific clause in the constitution, and was accordingly permitting the same.
Most cut motions pertained to the demands of two ministries — petroleum and fertilisers — and sought to express dissent over the hikes proposed in prices of fuels and fertilisers.
The first cut motion was moved by Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj.
Among others who joined her in moving the motions were BJP’s Murli Manohar Joshi, Ananth Kumar, CPI(M)’s Basudeb Acharia, CPI’s Gurudas Dasgupta, AIADMK’s M. Thambi Durai and TDP’s Nama Nageshwara Rao.
