Shimla: Violent protests erupted Friday over the slaughtering of a cow in upper Shimla region of Himachal Pradesh, police said.

“More than 2,000 people of a particular community staged a protest at nearby villages of Nerwa (in Chopal tehsil of Shimla district) this (Friday) morning over the cow slaughtered Thursday,” Superintendent of Police R.M. Sharma told IANS.

He said the protesters damaged two mosques to express their anger.

“Windowpanes and doors of one of the mosques were set on fire,” said Sharma, who was on his way to the spot.

“The situation is tense but under control,” another police officer said.

Police Thursday arrested one person on the charge of slaughtering the cow.

“Abdul was arrested last (Thursday) evening. Abdul killed the cow in a fit of rage as it was not giving milk for more than three years,” Sharma said.

Nerwa is some 120 km from here.
