Eid al Fitr 2020 Moon Sighting Live Update

10:45 pm (Indian Standard Time): Pakistan has not yet taken any decision about the exact date of Eid al Fitr celebration in the country.

According to the latest update, a meeting of the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee is underway in Karachi for sighting the moon of Shawwal. Separate meetings of regional Ruet committees are also underway at their respective regional headquarters.

Earlier in the morning Saturday, Pakistan Minister of Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain raked a controversy by his announcement that as per his calculation Eid al Fitr will be celebrated in Pakistan on Sunday May 24.

Religious affairs minister of Pakistan later said the final decision regarding the Eid date will be taken by the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee.

09:00 pm (India Standard Time): Muslims in India and Bangladesh will celebrate Eid al Fitr on Monday May 25, 2020, it is officially confirmed by religious authorities a little while ago.

"There is no report of moon sighting from any part of India. Hence Sunday will be 30th Ramadan 1441H. Eid al Fitr will be celebrated on Monday May 25, 2020", Muizuddin Ahmed of Imarat-e-Sharaiyah Hind, New Delhi told ummid.com.

Similar announcement has also been made by Religious Affairs Ministry Dhaka.

08:15 pm (India Standard Time):The moon of Shawwal month was not seen anywhere in the country (Bangladesh). Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of Muslims across the country, will be celebrated on Monday (May 25th), Bangladesh media reports said. An official announcement by the religious authorities is expected soon.

Meanwhile, the Central Moon (Hilal) Sighting Committees in New Delhi India and Karachi Pakistan are meeting at their respective headquarters to ascertain and confirm the reports of Eid al Fitr moon sighting. As of now, there is no report of moon sighting from any part of India.

07:45 pm (India Standard Time): The Central Moon (Hilal) Sighting Committees and religious authorities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have started the key meeting to ascertain and confirm the reports of Eid al Fitr moon sighting.

As of now, there is no report of moon sighting from any part of the three countries.

Eid al Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday if the moon is sighted today. Else, Sunday will be 30th Ramadan and Eid will be celebrated on Monday. A formal announcement is expected any moment.

On the hand, Muslims in Kerala, India, have announced the first day of Eid al Fitr 2020 on Sunday. Muslims in the Middle East, Turkey, Singpaore, United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia will also celebrate Eid on Sunday.

Muslims in Canada and Nigeria are celebrating Eid al Fitr today i.e. Saturday May 23, 2020.

05:00 pm (India Standard Time): Eid al Fitr 2020 will be celebrated in Pakistan on Sunday May 24, 2020, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain announced today morning.

But, a formal announcement by the religious authorities has not been made. India and Bangladesh will decide today evening the first day of Eid al Fitr in the respective countries.

03:45 pm (India Standard Time): Will Muslims in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh will celebrate Eid al Fitr with Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Turkey, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and other world countries?

This question is being raised because of the rare coincidence following the announcement by Arab states that they will celebrate Eid al Fitr on Sunday May 24, 2020.

The decision was taken after the new moon of the month of Shawwal was not sighted on Friday corresponding to 29th of Ramadan 1441H in the Middle East. Hence today i.e. Sunday May 23 is 30th Ramadan in the Arab states.

Saturday May 23 is 29th Ramadan in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. As per the Islamic Calendar, Muslims sight the new moon either on 29th or 30th of an ongoing month.

Accordingly, if the new moon is sighted today then Muslims in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, in a rarest of rare case, will celebrate Eid al Fitr with fellow Muslims in the Middle East.

If the new moon is not sighted today then they will complete the 30 days of Ramadan on Sunday and celebrate Eid al Fitr on Monday May 25, 2020. The actual picture will become clear after the sunset and Maghrib prayers today.

05:50 am (India Standard Time): Central Moon (Hilal) Sighting Committees and religious authorities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have issued appeals to Muslims in their respective countries to sight the crescent, Eid Moon or Eid Chand, Saturday May 23, 2020 corresponding to 29th Ramadan 1441H.

The Central Moon Sighting Committees, also known as Markazi Ruet-e-Hilal Committees, have also made special arrangements to sight the new moon and decide the first day of Eid 2020 in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other South Asian countries.

Moon sighting committees to met after Maghrib

The moon sighting committees in the India, Pakistan and Bangladesh will hold special meeting today after Salate Maghrib and ascertain, if any, reports of moon sighting.

Appeals to sight moon have also been issued by Hilal Committees in Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Patna, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Islamabad, Karachi, KP, Lahore, Dhaka, and other cities in the three countries.

The official announcement by Religious Affairs Ministry Dhaka and Central Moon Sighting Committee New Delhi and Karachi is expected soon after Salate Maghrib Saturday evening.

Islamic Calendar

A new month in the Islamic Calendar is decided based on sighting of the crescent – the new moon, on the 29th day of an ongoing month. If the moon is sighted on 29th, the new month begins the next day.

Otherwise, the next day is counted as the 30th and last day of the ongoing month and the next day is the first day of the new month.

This process is followed as per the tradition of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him). The beginning of Ramadan has traditionally been based on “hilal” sightings, which is the traditional method mentioned in the Quran and followed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Muslims in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Morocco, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Yemen, Sudan, Tunisia, Oman and other GCC nations will celebrate Eid al Fitr on Sunday May 24, 2020.

In Turkey, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand too Sunday May 24 marks the first day of Eid al Fitr 2020.

Rare chance

In a rarest of rare case Muslims in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh would celebrate Eid al Fitr with fellow Muslims in the Gulf and other parts of the world if the new moon is sighted today i.e. Saturday May 23. Normally there is a delay of at least one day between the two regions.

Eid al Fitr marks the end of Ramadan - the month of fasting in which Muslims across the world refrained from eating and drinking during day time. Special prayers, including Traweeh prayers, were offered all across the Muslim world at home because of lockdown. A huge amount of money and food were also donated in the Holy month of Ramadan to help the poor and needy.

Eid al Fitr amid Corona lockdown

Eid al Fitr will be celebrated this year amidst Coronavirus lockdown clamped in most of the countries, including India. Owing to the lockdown norms, Muslims have been advised to offer Eid prayers at home, and not on Eidgah grounds.

Video and text messages explaining how to offer Eid prayers at home are widely circulated among the Muslims.
