United Nations: In a major embarrassment for the Narendra Modi government, the United Nations has called for transparency and ‘level playing field’ for all political parties in the 2024 General Elections in India.
Commenting on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest and the freezing of the bank accounts of the Congress party, Stephane Dujarric, a Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said it is highly anticipated that people’s political and civil rights would be protected in India and any other countries having elections.
“What we very much hope that in India, as in any country that is having elections, everyone's rights are protected, including political and civil rights, and everyone can vote in an atmosphere that is free and fair," Dujarric said at a press conference here.
Stephane Dujarric was responding to a question on what was described as the political unrest in India ahead of the upcoming general elections.
India is in the process of electing the 18th Lok Sabha and according to the notification issued by the Election Commission of India voting for the first of seven phase elections will be held on April 19, 2024.
The counting of votes will be held on June 04, 2024. The election results will also be announced on the same day.
However, serious questions have been raised first by Germany and the United State and now by the United Nations over the Modi-led BJP government’s functioning.
Germany first raised questions on the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal. The United States followed days later expressing similar concerns and calling for a “fair trial”.
India objected calling the US and Germany comments ‘unwanted interference on India’s internal matters’.
"India's legal processes are based on an independent judiciary which is committed to objective and timely outcomes. Casting aspersions on that is unwarranted," the ministry of external affairs said in a statement.
Washington, however, doubled down its call for India to carry out “fair, transparent, and timely legal processes for each of these issues.”
“We don’t think anyone should object to that, and we’ll make the same thing clear privately,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters in Washington.
India had summoned the US and Germany envoys to register its objections. It has however not yet commented on the statements made by the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary General, Stephane Dujarric.
