Mediterranean Sea: Madleen, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) aid ship, is on its way to Gaza and is likely to reach the besieged Palestinian enclave on June 7, 2025 if not stopped using force.

Madleen, named after the first Palestinian fisherwman who ran her father’s fishing business after he was injured in a 2009 Israeli attack, was launched from Catania, Sicily, Sunday June 1, 2025.

As per the online tracker, Madleen has sailed through more than half of its journey despite facing drone attacks – two times, by the Israelis.

Who are onboard?

Onboard the ships are actor Liam Cunningham, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, French-Palestinian Member of European Parliament Rima Hassan and other activists.

Others onboard included Yasemin Acar of Germany, Baptiste Andre, Omar Faiad, Pascal Maurieras, Yanis Mhamdi and Reva Viard - all from France, Thiago Avila from Brazil, Suayb Ordu from Turkiye, Sergio Toribio from Spain and Marco van Rennes from The Netherlands.

The coalition had earlier planned Gaza aid ship Conscience. It was however bombed by the Israeli drones in international waters.

“Four crew members were injured, the ship was set ablaze, communications were severed, and the vessel was left adrift and taking on water”, the Coalition said.

The attack on Conscience flotilla occurred in European waters on May 2, 2025, in violation of international law, where it remains stranded.

“The bombing was a deliberate act of aggression and intimidation amid Israel’s 75 day total siege of Gaza”, the Coalition said.

Madleen under Israeli threat

The Madleen flotilla is also being targeted by the Israeli drones.

“A month after our latest attempt to go on with this mission, the boat was bombed twice. All evidence suggests Israel. And we are doing this because we have to keep our promise to the Palestinians to do everything in our power to protest against the genocide and to try to open up a humanitarian corridor”, Greta Thunberg said.

The Coalition further said that the ship was approached and circled by a drone on Wednesday night, followed by two others.

“These actions raise serious concerns about whether Greece and/or the European Union is conducting surveillance on behalf of Israel,” it said in a statement.

The drone was later identified as a Hellenic Coast Guard Heron which is believed to be developed by developed by the Malat (UAV) division of Israel Aerospace.

Israel based Walla news site had earlier reported that the Israeli navy commandos were preparing for the possibility of seizing the ship.

The report came after the Israeli military Wednesday warned it would take measures against the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.

The Madleen flotilla, armed with food, water, and medical supplies, aims to challenge the latest blockade of Gaza the Israeli occupation forces have imposed since March 18, 2025.
