Moscow/Kyiv: Russia Friday June 06, 2025 retaliated, what it called Ukraine's "terrorism" committed five days ago, hitting almost whole of Ukraine.
Russia launched 400 drones and 40 missiles hitting different targets in Ukraine in the largest ever attack since the Ukraine war began in 2022.
The Russian military said its forces carried out the large-scale overnight strikes against Ukrainian defense industry sites, using drones and long-range precision-guided weapons.
The barrage, which included air, sea and land based missiles as well as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), was a response to recent “terrorist acts” carried out by Kiev, Russia’s Defense Ministry said as reported by Russia Today.
Ukrainian officials also reported waves of missile and drone attacks across multiple cities, including the capital Kiev, as well as Lviv and Lutsk on Friday morning.
In a televised address Saturday, Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed the Russian attacks.
Zelensky said over 400 drones and more than 40 missiles - including ballistic missiles were used in the overnight strikes, which he said targeted "almost all of Ukraine".
Zelensky further said that Russia "must be held accountable" for the strikes targeted at civilians.
Ukrainian officials confirmed death of 5 civilians. At least three people were killed and 17 others, including two children, were wounded in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said, describing the assault as “the most powerful” on the city since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Russian shelling hit the city of Kherson, killing a couple and damaging residential buildings, regional Governor Oleksandr Prokudin confirmed. In Dnipro, two women, aged 45 and 88, were injured in separate attacks.
The Russian attack came five days after Ukraine in a surprising attack on June 1, 2025 stormed Russian military bases using 117 drones.
In the operation codenamed “Operation Spiderweb” Ukraine claimed destroying Russian military planes worth a combined $7 bn.
