Taiwan trade blacklist sees two new entrants - China's Huawei and SMIC

Beijing: Following the footsteps of the USA, Taiwan has added Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) to its trade blacklist.
Citing the updated list published Saturday by the Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs on its website, South China Morning Post reported that the International Trade Administration of the island included Huawei, SMIC and a number of their subsidiaries in the Strategic High-Tech Commodities Entity List.
The entity list barred both the companies from acquiring key semiconductor technologies from Taiwanese companies, dealing a blow to China’s chipmaking ambitions to rival US producers like Nvidia.
Self-ruled Taiwan is America’s biggest unofficial ally and arms seller though China considers it as its own territory.
Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) are two of China’s leading chipmakers.
US Sanctions against Chinese firms
The two are among other Chinese companies sanctioned by the United States and prevented from receiving new equipment licenses. The U.S. sanctioned the top Chinese companies to, what it says, restrict China’s access to advanced technologies.
The decision by Taiwan to add Huawei and SMIC in the trade backlist is seen the extension of the U.S. policy formalized amidst the trade war between the two countries.
Taiwan is home to the world's largest chipmaker, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), a major supplier for Nvidia.
Last November, the U.S. had ordered TSMC to halt supplies of certain advanced chips to Chinese customers as part of broader efforts to restrict China's access to cutting-edge technologies, according to the Associated Press.
