Malegaon:
He was
instrumental in winning many tournaments for his teams. He had piles
of runs to his credits. And the large number of wickets he had taken
only added to his all-rounder performance for Citra, the local team
he captained for years. With dream of representing the State and
reaching to Ranji Trophy he continued to perform, however, he never
thought that it would come true so soon. On a regular evening on
June 28th while he still had his pads on, he was
interrupted by a phone call. “Is this Azhar?” the caller confirmed
and then went on, “You have been selected for the Maharashtra
Cricket Association (MCA) team. Get ready for Challenger Trophy to
be played in Sri Lanka.”
For Azhar Ahemad
it was like a dream coming true. Nonetheless achieving this target
was never an easy task for him. Though he inherited “cricketing”
from his father Riyaz Ahemad, a renowned cricketer too, Azhar had to
go through many ups and down before being selected for the
Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) team that was set for an
abroad tour. However 2008 proved pretty lucky for him when his
performance for Nandurbar District Cricket Association (NDCA) caught
the eyes of the selectors. Playing for NDCA in April 2008, Azhar
scored more than 1000 runs and took 60 wickets in 12 matches held at
various grounds in Nasik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Nanded and Prabhani.
His excellent performance for NDCA in 2008 was followed by an
emphatic 104 against Star Club of Pune at Mahatma Nagar in Nashik
and yet another assuring 209 embellished with 6 sixes and 20
boundaries against Stadium Club of Pune at Nashik Golf Ground. He
proved his talent further by taking 11 and 8 wickets in these
two-day test matches respectively.
Azhar’s selection
for Nandurbar District Cricket Association (NDCA) is as dramatic as
his selection for the Sri Lanka Challenger Trophy. Recalling how he
started playing for NDCA Azhar says, “After defeating Jain
Irrigation Cricket team of Jalgaon in several encounters, Mangesh
Patil, the captain of the team invited me to join his team.” Mangesh,
quite impressed by Azhar’s performance, introduced him to Yuvraj
Patil who coaches Nandurbar District Cricket Association (NDCA)
apart from being member of Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA).
Azhar who came
back to Malegaon after the successful Sri Lanka tour on July 29 is
now readying himself for the fitness camp scheduled for the first
week of August. Starting from August 5, this camp would select 15
players from 37 contenders to represent the Maharashtra under-19
team. Looking at his talent one is sure Azhar would surely make it
to final 15. However what is strange is why Azhar could not get a
chance to play for Nashik. “Because I didn’t know how to approach”,
he says.
