Malegaon: Azhar Ahmed, a young cricketer from Malegaon - the Muslim dominated textile town in North Maharashtra has been included in the State Ranji Test Cricket Team.

Maharashtra Ranji team will be facing West Bengal in Pune on November 3 in its first Ranji Trophy tournament match. The young cricketer from Malegaon Azhar is all set to be part of this team.

Though Malegaon has quiet a few number of astonishing cricketers who played at National level, Azhar Ahmed is the first from the town who has been included in the Maharashtra Ranji Test team. A good performance in Ranji Trophy is a key to the inclusion in the National cricket team.

Earlier, Azhar Ahmed had represented the Maharashtra Cricket Association's (MCA) under-19 cricket team that visited Sri Lanka in 2008 for the Challenger Trophy.

"Azhar was instrumental in winning many tournaments for his teams. He had piles of runs to his credits. And the large number of wickets he had taken only added to his all-rounder performance for Citra, the local team he captained for years. He was part of the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) cricket team that represented the state for the Challenger Trophy in 2008", informed close friend Imran Ansari.

Azhar's Dream Run...

·        Playing for NDCA in April 2008, Azhar scored more than 1000 runs and took 60 wickets in 12 matches. His excellent performance for NDCA was followed by an emphatic 104 against Star Club of Pune and yet another assuring 209 embellished with 6 sixes and 20 boundaries against Stadium Club of Pune. He proved his talent further by taking 11 and 8 wickets in these two-day test matches respectively.

"But Azhar had to go through many ups and down before being selected first for the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) team and now for the Ranji Trophy test team. Year 2008-09 is pretty lucky for him when his performance for Nandurbar District Cricket Association (NDCA) caught the eyes of the selectors", Imran said.

Playing for NDCA in April 2008, Azhar scored more than 1000 runs and took 60 wickets in 12 matches held at various grounds in Nasik, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Nanded and Prabhani. His excellent performance for NDCA in 2008 was followed by an emphatic 104 against Star Club of Pune at Mahatma Nagar in Nashik and yet another assuring 209 embellished with 6 sixes and 20 boundaries against Stadium Club of Pune at Nashik Golf Ground. He proved his talent further by taking 11 and 8 wickets in these two-day test matches respectively.

Besides playing for MCA in its under-19 team, Azhar had also recently been part of the Maharashtra Ranji One day team. "His brilliant performances first at the Challenger Trophy in Sri Lanka and later for the Ranji Trophy one day has earned him a place in the Maharashtra Ranji Test Cricket team", Imran said.

The inclusion of young Azhar in Maharashtra Ranji team is being acclaimed from every corner of the textile town.

"The inclusion of the local boy in the state Ranji team is really a proud for us. We hope the inclusion proves a landmark for Azhar's inclusion in the National cricket team", said Khaleel Ansari, a former cricketer who represented the town in state level competitions.
