AYUSH to be integrated with mainstream health services

New Delhi: The Union government has taken a number of measures to promote Unani medicine in the country, including upgrading of two state-level Government Unani Colleges to the level of National Institutes at a cost of Rs. 50 crore each.

 

Minister of state for Health S Gandhiselvan in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today said, the Government Nizamia Tibbia College, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and the Government Ayurvedic and Unani College, Karol Bagh, Delhi have been identified for upgradation.

 

Under the Centres of Excellence Scheme of the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH), financial assistance will be granted to the Naimat Science Academy, Chennai for upgrading it into Centre of Excellence for Unani Regimental Therapy at a cost of Rs 250 lakh, he said.

 

Sahara Foundation, Hyderabad would be upgraded and Dr Ahmed Ashraf Memorial Unani Speciality Treatment Centre for Paralysis (Falij) would be established at a cost of Rs 250.56 lakh, while the Ibn-e-sina Academy, Aligarh would be upgraded at a cost of Rs 100 lakh.

 

To promote the formal study of Unani system of medicine, the Central Government has set up the National Institute of Unani Medicine at Bangalore in the year 1984 and it has a strength of 74 Post graduate students. In addition to the five PG courses currently being offered, it plans to commence eight new PG Degree courses in two phases. NIUM also plans to commence PG Diploma Courses in Unani Medicine in Regimental Therapy, Pharmacy and Skin Disorders.

 

Collaborative clinical studies on major diseases with other scientific organisations and industries are also being undertaken. The Central Council of Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) is being developed as a Nodal Centre for Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Reorientation of Training Programme (ROTP) for teaching faculty in Unani medicine and private practitioners in Unani medicine.

 

Unani drugs developed by the CCRUM are being introduced in NRHM programme. New centres in the states and union territory where Unani infrastructure is presently not available are being set up.

 

CCRUM is also being developed as a Nodal centre for Research Registry in Unani System of Medicine.

 

The government is also organising health Camps on large-scale particularly in Western Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh under Public Health Intervention. Standards of 150 single/compound drugs have been finalised. Extra Mural Research Projects (EMR) are being taken up.

 

Various Unani institutes and NGOs are being supported under different schemes of the department like Public Health Initiatives, Acquisition, Cataloging, Digitisation and Publication of text books, he added.
