Malegaon: Amid unruly scene and ruckus by the ruling and opposition parties, the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) on Wednesday passed a resolution to release the general body meeting agendas and its proceeding in the Urdu language.
The resolution was moved by Congress house leader Khalid Shaikh Rasheed in the general body meeting held today afternoon.
"It is demanded from the house to pass this resolution since majority of the councillors, including a large number of women councillors, are Urdu speaking, and are unable to understand Marathi", Khalid Shaikh Rasheed said while moving the resolution.
He said the resolution was nothing to do with any religion or community. He also said that Urdu is born and grown up in India, and it is not the language of Muslims.
Out of the total 84, the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) has 63 Urdu speaking councillors belonging to Congress, Teesra Mahaz, Nationalist Congress Party, Janata Dal and other smaller parties.
However, the Shiv-Sena was not convinced and the resolution prompted a very strong reaction from them. As soon as the resolution was read in the house, Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) councillors led by Sanjay Dusane rushed to the Mayor podium, climbed on the tables, throwaway chairs and tables, started shouting slogans "Jai Sri Ram" and "Jai Shivaji".
In retaliation, Congress, Teesra Mahaz, Jan Rajya Aghadi, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) councillors and others from smaller parties led by Khalid Shaikh Rasheed too rushed to the Mayor table and shouted slogans "Nair-e-Takbir Allah Akbar".
Sensing trouble between the ruling and opposition parties is escalating, Mayor Tahira Shaikh Rasheed took the microphone on her hands, and declared that the resolution was passed by a majority.
The declaration led to another round of chaos in the house and consequent walk out by the Shiv-Sena and MNS councillors.
In recent months, Nanded Municipal Corporation and Prabhani Municipal Corporation too had passed similar resolution.
Later while speaking to the ummid.com, Sena leader Sanjay Dusane termed the resolution anti-state and anti-constitution, and said they will be challenging the decision.
"The resolution is against the spirit of the constitution. Shiv Sena will be challenging it with the state government and revenue commissioner", he said.
