Malegaon: A 30-year old Police Sub-Inspector shot himself to death inside Malegaon City Police Station Saturday, local media reported.

Police Sub Inspector Azhar Shaikh committed suicide reportedly by his service revolver.

Azhar Shaikh was working with Malegaon police as writer for DYSP Malegaon Ratnakar Yeole, according to Maidan-e-Sahafat Urdu.

He reportedly committed suicide while a high level meeting chaired by Nashik Rural SP Aarti Singh was underway inside the premises of Malegaon City Police station located near Ambedkar Putla.

The meeting was called to assess the situation arising in Malegaon due to the sudden jump in Coronavirus cases in the last three days. ASP Malegaon Sandip Ghughe and other senior officials are also present in the meeting. The Malegaon Police has announced complete shutdown in the city till April 14.

Azhar Shaikh hailed from the neighboring Jalgaon while his maternal grandparents are from Raunakabad area of Malegaon.

The immediate cause of Azhar Shaikh's reported suicide is not yet known. The dead body of Azhar Shaikh has been sent to Malegaon General Hospital for post-mortem.
