US Council Resolution against BJP

Saint Paul (Minnesota): In a major setback for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India, the City Council of Saint Paul, state capital of Minnesota in the United States, has passed a resolution condemning what it called the "Islamophobic ideology" of India's ruling party.

"Reaffirming Saint Paul as a welcoming city, expressing solidarity with Saint Paul’s South Asian community regardless of religion and caste by rejecting the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Islamophobic ideology, and opposing India’s National Registry of Citizens and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)", the resolution said.

The Saint Paul City Council resolution RES-20-712 was adopted on Wednesday May 20, 2020 with 5-0 vote and 2 members abstaining.

The resolution was supported by 36 organizations, including Amnesty International, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Muslim Caucus of America, Hindus for Human Rights, Jewish Voice for Peace Twin Cities, The Advocates for Human Rights – and locally, SEIU Local 284, the Minnesota Nurses Association, Jewish Community Action and World Without Genocide.

World Hindu Council of America (VHPA) has however opposed the resolution.

The ruling BJP had on December 11, 2019 moved the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the Parliament. The amended act was passed by both the houses of the Parliament and became a law when the President signed it on December 12, 2019.

The Act seeks to provide Indian nationality to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists fleeing persecution in neighbouring Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and other Muslim countries.

But, critics say combined with National Register of Citizen (NRC) the amended law targets Muslims. The ruling BJP denies these apprehensions.
