Paris: Two people were killed and scores other were left injured after fans celebrating Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) stunning UEFA Champions League final victory ran amok Saturday.
The epicenter of the clashes was France capital Paris. The authorities have arrested some 560 people, the interior ministry said.
Video footage online show football fans clashing with security forces in Paris streets, vehicles burnt and shops vandalized.
The clashes erupted after local Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) defeated Inter Milan, an Italian professional football club based in Milan in the 2025 UEFA Champions League 5-0.
Overnight, though, AFP journalists saw police on the famed thoroughfare using water cannon to stop a crowd reaching the Arc de Triomphe that sits at the top of the Champs-Elysees.
“Troublemakers on the Champs-Elysees were looking to create incidents and repeatedly came into contact with police by throwing large fireworks and other objects,” police said in a statement.
As many as 11.5 million people tuned in across France to watch the match, according to figures given by the Mediametrie audience-measurement company and one of the broadcasters, Canal+.
Celebrations in Paris can sometimes get out of control after big soccer matches. Knowing this, PSG forward player Ousmane Dembélé had asked fans to stay calm after the final.
"Let's celebrate, but without damaging anything in Paris," he said in an interview with Canal Plus.
Meanwhile, French President Macron has announced to host the PSG team to celebrate the "historic victory" Sunday night.
