In a bizarre moment for any state head, French President Emmanuel Macron was Sunday slapped by his wife Brigitte Macron in full public view, or this is what appears watching a video now viral on social media.

In the video, Macron is seen preparing to off board the presidential plane after landing in Vietnam. Suddenly, his wife hit him on his face.

Macron looked in shock for a few seconds, then waved and smiled at the waiting host on the tarmac. But, instead of boarding off the plane, he went inside.

He came back after a while - Brigitte Macron is seen joining him from the other side of the exit door.

The embarrassing situation did not end here.

As the two approached the mobile escalator, Macron offered her arm to Brigitte. She however refused to oblige.

Macron arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam at the start of a Southeast Asia tour. Macron’s Vietnam visit is the first by a French President in almost a decade, comes as he aims to boost France's influence in its former colony.

Social media users are also analyzing the viral video clip – frame by frame, in order to show Macron’s reaction, one frame showing him in rage.

However, Macron’s office Elysee Palace, played down the moment, denying it showed an argument between the couple, who have been married since 2007.

"It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing one last time before the start of the trip by having a laugh. It was a moment of closeness," an official claimed.

A close associate of the president later described the incident as a couple's harmless "squabble". Another member of his entourage played down the significance of the incident, Reuters reported.

Macron later brushed off the reports that he was shoved in the face by his wife, saying they were "just joking".

Macron’s relationship with wife Brigitte has always been a talking point as she is 25 years older than him. The two met in 1993 when Macron (now 47) was a student at Lycée la Providence, the high school where Brigette Macron (now 72) was his teacher.
