Dubai: To explore the spirit of Ramadan and experience what a Muslim undergoes while fasting, Dubai Festival and Retail Establishment (DFRE) is inviting non-Muslims in the UAE for a day's fast in the coming week. The DFRE is also sending facts and tips during the weeks preceding the fast to ensure those joining are well prepared.
Marked as 'Fast for a Day', the day-long event will end with a grand iftar to be hosted at the Dubai International Exhibition and Convention Centre on July 28.
"It is the first ever time we have taken this initiative and our aim is to educate people on what one undergoes during fasting. For the 'Fast for a Day' initiative, people can register with us and once they do it, they will get facts and free tips including nutritional advice on fasting", Khadija Turki, Senior Manager, Public Relations, Dubai Festival and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of DTCM, told XPRESS.
"We want to educate non-Muslim expatriates on how fasting is much more than not eating," she added.
"The participants will end their fast with a Grand Iftar at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Admission is free and open to all", she said.
Khadija said the initiative is not an endeavour to convert people but to raise awareness about the various aspects of fasting.
"It would challenge you not just physically but also in many other ways, such as your tolerance level, your ability to maintain focus, etc. Once you undertake the fast, you would come to how your behaviour is impacted, how your mind and body react, and you would be able to understand the essence of it. Also, they would become more sensitive about eating or drinking in front of a person who is fasting," she said.
Around 250 people are expected to participate, she added.
Many government officials and celebrities are also expected to be present at the Grand Iftar during which people will also share their experiences.
