AMU to have 250-acre branch in Bihar

Govt. acquires 93 acres of land for Kerala AMU campus

Malegaon: The efforts of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to establish five centers have made decisive progress in the states of West Bengal and Kerala.

According to the AMU spokesperson Dr. Rahat Abrar, the University is hopeful for starting these Special Centers in a symbolic way from the next academic year if the concerned governments hand over the proposed land to AMU in full.

Regarding the establishment of Special Centre at Murshidabad, the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Professor P.K. Abdul Aziz met the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee along with MP and AMU Court member Moinul Hasan and discussed with him the matter pertaining to the transfer of land for AMU Centre at Murshidabad in West Bengal.

Pranab Mukherjee has promised that the matter would be resolved within a few days and the amount of Rs. 25 crores each meant for West Bengal and Kerala will be transferred within a couple of days.

The Union Finance Minister has suggested that the Centre be started from the next session and building could be made available in Murshidabad for this purpose.

Meanwhile, M.A. Baby, Minister of Education in Kerala yesterday informed the AMU Vice Chancellor that in the first phase, 156 acres of land will be transferred to AMU by the Government of Kerala on March 6, 2010 at a public function in Perinthalmanna, Malappuram District of Kerala. The function would be attended by Minister for Revenue Rajendran and Minister for Minority Affairs Palalu Mohammad Kutty, Government of Kerala.

Moreover, for verification of land records and handing over of land to AMU, a team of senior functionaries of AMU led by the AMU Registrar, Professor V.K. Abdul Jaleel, will be visiting Perinthalmanna on 4th of March 2010. Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor will be attending the function on March 6, 2010 at Thiruvanthapuram.

The Government of Kerala has decided to allot about 400 acres of land for the  purpose of establishing Special Center at Malapuram. In a joint meeting in Malapuram on September 30, 2009 the fast track land acquisition officer Mrs. Lalita Ambika, IAS and the District Magistrate M. C. Mohan Das promised to handover 156 acers of land now and the remaining part after March 2010 with a thirty meter road connecting the new campus to national highway.

Besides West Bengal and Kerala, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has also proposed to start similar centres in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. While the acquisition of 250 acres of land in Kishanganj in Bihar is underway, nothing in this regard has been initiated by the governments in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
