New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India Monday rejected BJP leader Vijay Shah’s apology, simultaneously issuing notice to the state government with regard to the action taken against the Minister.
A 7-time BJPM MLA and cabinet minister in Madhya Pradesh, Vijay Shah, is facing legal action for his remarks targeted at decorated Indian Army Officer, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who was part of the 3-member team appointed to brief media about India’s Operation Sindoor launched against Pakistan.
However, in a shocking turn of events, Vijay Shah, while addressing a public meeting in Raikunda village, Ambedkar Nagar (Mhow) Madhya Pradesh, made derogatory and insulting remarks against Col Sofiya, linking her and the whole Muslim community with terrorists.
The remarks sparked nationwide outrage, while the MP government and the BJP were urged to take action against Vijay Shah. However, neither the government nor the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) took any note of these demands.
Consequently, the Division Bench of Jabalpur High Court Wednesday May 14, 2025 taking suo moto cognizance ordered the State Police to register FIR against Vijay Shah.
On his part, Vijay Shah moved the Supreme Court of India, seeking relief saying he has apologised for his remarks. But, the Supreme Court rejected the BJP leader's apology.
Coming down heavily on Vijay Shah, the Apex Court said the Madhya Pradesh minister's apology lacked sincerity.
"What kind of apology have you tendered? There is some meaning of apology. Sometimes people use docile language only to wriggle out of proceedings, and sometimes they shed crocodile tears. What kind of apology is yours?" Justice Surya Kant asked.
"You want to give the impression that the court had asked you to apologise. What prevented you from making a sincere apology for your crass comments till now?" he asked.
The SC while rejecting Vijay Shah's apology also said he must face consequences.
The SC also said a 3-member team of IPS officers, which must have a female IPS officer, will probe the matter and submit a report by May 28, 2025.
The Supreme Court also issued a notice to Madhya Pradesh Government, saying it is closely watching what action it is taking against the minister.
"We would like to have a close watch. It's a litmus test for you", the court said.
The Apex Court had on May 15 rejected the minister’s plea for urgent hearing and asked him to go back to the MP High Court.
The Madhya Pradesh government has filed FIR against the minister following the MP HC order. But, it has so far not taken any concrete action against him as demanded by the opposition parties and the civil society.Follow ummid.com WhatsApp Channel for all the latest updates.
