Mumbai: Social media users on Saturday hailed 08-year-old Climate Activist Licypriya Kangujam after she turned down the "honour" bestowed upon her by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the #SheInspiresUs campaign.

The campaign titled #SheInspiresUs was first publicised by Modi himself who said he will handover the control of his social media account to "inspiring women" to mark this year's International Women's Day which falls on Sunday.

On Friday, the government took to Twitter to share the story of Licypriya Kangujam as one of the inspirations.

“@LicypriyaK is an child environmental activist from Manipur. In 2019, she was awarded a Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Children Award, a World Children Peace Prize, and an India Peace Prize. Isn’t she inspiring? (sic)" the post using @mygovindia Twitter handler of Citizen engagement platform of Government of India, read.

"Do you know someone like her? Tell us, using #SheInspiresUs,” the government posted on the micro-blogging site", the post which was tagged bu Licypriya's image, read.

However in a snub to the Modi government Licypriya rejected the campaign and asked the Prime Minister not to "celebrate her".

"Dear Narendra Modi ji, Please don’t celebrate me if you are not going to listen to my voice", Licypriya wrote on Twitter using @LicypriyaK.

"Thank you for selecting me amongst the inspiring women of the country under your initiative #SheInspiresUs. After thinking many times, I decided to turn down this honour. Jai Hind!” she added.

Later while talking to The Indian Express, she termed the entire campaign like a "fairness cream".

“It (the campaign) may be a good initiative to them, but considering the crimes against women and children, I don’t think it can solve anything. This will be like applying a fairness cream on our face which no longer stays once you clean yourself,” she told the daily.

The child activist earned plenty of plaudits from social media users for the snub to the Modi government for its selective approach.

“Heartfelt thanks for rejecting the offer on behalf of all women of India who are aghast at their PM following men who issue rape threats, who puts rapists & horrific woman Pragya Godse to represent women of India in parliament, who by every action supports rapists in all ways", Bismaya Mahapatra wrote on Twitter.

“Small hands but tight slap on this government. Good one kiddo", a user identified as Chirag Ojha, wrote.
