French nationals fighting in Gaza must be charged with war crimes: MP

Paris: French nationals fighting in Gaza must be charged with war crimes and tried in court, French lawmaker Thomas Porte said Saturday December 16, 2023.

"French nationals fighting with the Israeli Occupation Forces must be referred to justice on charges of committing war crimes in Gaza”, French MP Thomas Porte said as reported by the French website Europe 1.

Thomas Porte later also took social media platform X and reiterated his demands.

“More than 4,000 French people involved in the Israeli army which is committing war crimes in Gaza!” Thomas Portes, deputy of the French National Assembly, wrote on X originally launched as Twitter.

In the same post, Portes also called on the French Minister of Justice to scrutinize the status of French nationals presently enlisted in the Israeli army, including those with dual citizenship, and said they must be held accountable if they were involved in war crimes.

“Given the war crimes committed by the Israeli army, both in Gaza and the West Bank, it is unacceptable for French citizens to participate,” Portes posted.

As per the nationality law in France, a French national may not work for an army of a foreign country, and if he or she does so, his/her nationality will be withdrawn immediately, according to Quds News Network.

Thomas Porte had earlier in November accused Israel of waging a colonial war against Palestinian.

“Israel gave one hour for patients and displaced persons to be evacuated from the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza while dozens of babies are at risk of dying”, he had posted on X ion Nov 19, 2023.

“Attacks are also increasing in the West Bank against civilians by settlers. Israel is waging a colonial war to eradicate the Palestinians,” he added.

Thomas Porte's latest demand came after Israeli Occupation Forces killed more than 18,800 people - over 70 per cent of them children, in Gaza in indiscriminate bombing of civilian areas including schools, hospitals and places of worship.

Among those killed in the Israeli shelling are also medical staff, teachers, journalists, academicians, UN, Red Cross and WHO aid workers.
